Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas recently proposed that Chinese students should not be allowed to study advanced science in the United States, but they could study Shakespeare and the Federalist Papers.

There was some mockery of Senator Cotton and the question was asked, “Does Tom Cotton think Shakespeare was American?”

In reality, Shakespeare almost was an American, being an Englishman in the period of time in which the Thirteen English Colonies began to be settled.

Shakespeare has been an important and formative part of American culture, and America is a good place to study Shakespeare.

That’s what the mockers don’t get.
