Germany won the 2014 World Cup, held in Brazil.  The World Cup is an international soccer tournament held every four years.

The Mexican team was eliminated by the Netherlands team, and there was a controversial call in the game.   Mexican player Rafael Marquez fouled Dutch player Arjen Robben.   After studying  videos and still photos of the incident, it seems to me that it really was a foul.  Of course, soccer players tend to over-dramatize things, and that’s what Arjen Robben did.

It’s true that soccer is the most popular sport in the world  However, it is not true that soccer is the most popular sport in every single country in the world.  In this  blog entry, I have linked to a map showing the favorite sport in every country in the world.  There are plenty of other countries, besides the U.S., in which  soccer is not the most popular sport.

In fact, the world’s two most populous countries are China and India, and soccer is not the favorite sport in either country.  In China it’s ping pong, in India it’s cricket.

Anyway, the map helps to put things in perspective.
