“The University of Texas will change its colors to maroon and white before Texas goes purple, much less blue,” Gov. Rick Perry has  claimed.

Perry, and indeed many Texans, seem confident that it won’t happen, but if present demographic trends continue, can Texas avoid turning Democratic?

Consider what this would mean. Texas has 38 electoral votes. If Texas moved to the Democratic column, would the GOP—or any party besides the Democratic Party —be able to win a presidential election?
