English is the language of our country, a critical component of our national identity. If we didn’t speak English we wouldn’t be the same country.
The primacy of English in the U.S. is threatened today by the growth of Spanish as a media, business and political language, creating an alternative society with its own language.
This creeping bilingualism threatens our common civic language of English. After all, if politicians are lying in one language, it’s certainly easier to keep track of than if they are speaking several languages!
Two of the forces promoting this creeping bilingualism are the
Spanish-language media networks Univision and Telemundo.
