Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, or AMLO, Mexico’s President since December 1st, continues to refrain from speaking ill of President Trump.

On December 12th, the two presidents spoke by phone.  (It had to be with translation help, as neither speaks the other’s language).

In a press conference on December 13th, four reporters asked about Trump, but AMLO wouldn’t criticize the American President, and seems to be going out of his way from doing so.

Many of us have admired Japan’s tight immigration policy, which protects its own people rather than flooding the country with foreigners working cheaper.   Japan wants to remain Japanese.

But could that change ?   France24.com reports that Japan passed a law that could  bring in over a quarter million workers.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrdor, known by the acronym AMLO, formed by his initials, became President of Mexico on December 1st.  I wish AMLO well.

AMLO is very ambitious, and believes that his new administration is ushering in the “Fourth Transformation” of Mexican history.

So far, President Lopez Obrador  has a good relationship with Trump.  As for immigration,  AMLO has a proposal for a huge aid program which would improve the economies of Central America and Mexico.

Regardless of what comes of this, the U.S. still needs to get control of its border and its nationality policy.

But if we can help Mexico and work with AMLO on mutually beneficial goals, I support that.   After all, Mexico is our neighbor.

The supposed need for more agricultural laborers has, since the days of slavery, been a major justification for the use of cheap labor. In the long run though “cheap labor” is anything but cheap.

As agriculture continues to be mechanized/automatized/robotized, this excuse is less and less valid, if it ever was. Even the New York Times is discovering agricultural mechanization, though I doubt it will change the paper’s immigration outlook.

The Honduran “caravan” has arrived to Tijuana, a Mexico city on the border, across from San Diego.

And there have been protests, as many Tijuana residents oppose the presence of the Hondurans, who, they fear, will wind up staying in Tijuana.

So what should the United States do?  Why won’t we really secure our border?   Can’t the military be effectively used to secure the border?

We need to secure our border, to end this continent-wide humanitarian disaster.  if you want to help poor folks in foreign countries, help them there, don’t encourage thousands of them to traipse across the continent.

Mexicans in Tijuana protested at a camp of Honduran migrants right on the border.    They complain about the adverse effects of Honduran migrants on  security and employment.

Wow, sounds like American complaints about immigration.
